Remastered has returned to digital stores

Seven months after it was delisted from digital storefronts, DuckTales: Remastered is back.

DuckTales: Remastered, which was developed by WayForward and initially released for PC and consoles in 2013, bid a fond farewell to all platforms in a flurry of dramatic discounts last August – and while publisher Capcom never offered an explanation for its removal, it seemed reasonable to assume that licensing issues were to blame.

Now, though, it’s returned with equally little explanation. “If you missed this gem the first time around,” says Capcom in its announcement post, “now’s the perfect time to dive in. Calling back to the golden age of 8-bit gaming and Saturday morning cartoons, DuckTales: Remastered features hand-drawn animated sprites that bring each character to life in a vibrant world.”

Those who missed last year’s discount bonanza will doubtless be disappointed to learn that no similar deals are in play to celebrate DuckTales: Remastered’s return. Instead, those wishing to pick it up can expect to pay around £12 for the privilege as it reappears on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, Xbox One (via backwards compatibility), and Steam.

Not that Eurogamer was particularly sold on the experience when DuckTales: Remastered released in 2013. “For its target audience – those late 20s, early 30s gamers who remember blowing on the NES cart’s connectors when it wouldn’t load – the impact of WayForward’s high-purity dose of old-fashioned platforming has been diluted by the new wrapping,” wrote contributor Craig Owens in his review.

“For the Pixar generation, meanwhile, there’s just a quaint, old-school platformer here, starring a character of whom they’ve never heard.”
